…when my heart is
overwhelmed:
lead
me to the ROCK that is higher
than I.

Psalm 61:2

One of my favorite
descriptions of God is to see Him as a rock.
I can’t take credit for this description. I didn’t make it up. He says that this is who He is.

What kind of a rock
are we talking about?

We’re talkin’ a cliff , a boulder , an edge.

        We’re talkin’ strength and refuge.

                We’re
talkin’ mighty and immovable.

                    Permanent, unshakable.

                            Firm, sure, confident, everlasting.

                                            We’re talkin’ unchangeable, solid,

                                                    and sheltering.

In my
previous blog we talked about how David
knew his God
. This is the beauty of
his cry in the midst of being overwhelmed.
He knew that God was a ROCK. He
knew that God was able to deliver him in the turmoil and through the turmoil,
to a place far above the circumstances of his life. Here’s another place where
David knew his Father as a ROCK.

My soul waits in silence for God only; from Him
is my salvation.
He only is my ROCK and my salvation,
My stronghold;
I shall not be greatly shaken.
Psalm 62:1-2

A physical rescue is always good. Being lead out of a dangerous situation, and
set upon a “rock,” covered and protected in safety. And that is certainly our God. He rescues and delivers. He changes our
circumstances. I love it when He does
that!

But the rescue of the spirit will give us life in any circumstance. If we let Him, He will deliver us to
a deep-seated rest, peace, and contentment that gently and firmly assures us,

You have nothing to fear my child, I am with you,” or

“I see what you’re
going through and I am your answer
,” or

we will get through this together and I will make all
things beautiful,
” or

trust me and you
will find that I am more than able to accomplish everything that concerns you
today.”

The truth is, really, when we face the Father- the ROCK of
Him -we become overwhelmed in a new way.
We become overwhelmed by His love, His ability, His peace, His
faithfulness, and His presence. We become overwhelmed by Him. And there is nothing better.

My soul, wait in
silence for God only,
For my hope is from
Him.
He only is my ROCK
and my salvation,

My stronghold; I
shall not be shaken.
On God my salvation
and my glory rest;
The ROCK of my
strength,

My refuge is in God.
Trust in Him at all
times, O people;
Pour out your heart
before Him;

God is a refuge for
us.
Psalm 62:5-8
